Romans 5

Far too many people, including Christians, do not understand How much God loves us. Some think that God could not love them or that He is sitting up in heaven waiting to condemn mankind. But the truth is that He loves us…He loves for us is so great that He sent His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, to die for us so that we could spend eternity with Him.

Romans 5:8 says, “But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while were still sinners.”

Come Join us this spring as we look at Romans chapter 5 and hear about God’s Great Love for us and what His love does for us. As we learn about God’s Great Love, our hearts will fill with love for Him.

Romans 5:5, “For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love.”

Life is not meant to be lived alone. In fact, it’s impossible to find fulfillment in life with the absence of meaningful relationships. We believe that it is essential that we share our lives with others as we strive to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. We believe sustained life change happens best in the context of community. In COMMUNITY GROUPS, people get together to share a meal, study the Bible, and discuss the issues and challenges of life.

CornerStone Community Groups are currently engaged in a study called

Read the Bible for Life

Community Groups meet each Sunday at 6 pm in the church fellowship hall.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does a community group look like? We believe sustained life change happens best in Community Groups. As CornerStone Baptist Church continues to grow, it is our goal to develop our Community Groups so that they are made up of 10-20 people that meet together throughout the week in members’ homes all over our community. It is in a Community Group where you study the Bible together and are in a setting in which you can tackle the tough questions and challenges of life. You will find Small Groups to be a comfortable place where you can connect with and share life with like-minded people.

How much of my time is this going to take? Community Group meetings last approximately 1.5 hours each—45 minutes for snacking, eating, and hanging out; 45 minutes for Bible Study. As Community Group members begin to develop community, they most likely will want to spend even more time together.

What are we going to do with our children during our Community Group? During the first half of the meeting they hang out with the entire group. During the last half of the meeting childcare will be available with an age appropriate lesson for kids in K-6.

Am I going to have to talk or can I just sit and listen during meetings? Community Groups are like family – sometimes you talk, sometimes you listen. No one is forced to talk or to lead the group. As the group develops, people become much more comfortable. We have discovered that people who seldom speak up in large groups will talk in Community Groups.

Will I have to pray out loud? No. Again, you are allowed to move, grow, at your own pace. When you want to share a prayer concern or pray out loud, you will be encouraged to do so.

How much do I have to know about the Bible? None. Community Groups are all about learning the Bible not debating it or being tested on it. There will be seasons when all Community Groups will study curriculum that coincides with the Sunday sermon series. This is when the greatest personal spiritual growth happens. This is reason enough to want to be in a Community Group.

If I don’t like it, can I leave without people being mad at me? Yes, but most people build such community that they do not want to stop being part of the group.

If you would like more information about getting connected in a community group, please contact Greg Upperman at 662-769-7856.

Is there anything for my kids?

YES!

At CornerStone, we truly value children! Families are so important! We, as a church, simply want to come alongside the family as partners with parents and guardians to see children become fully devoted followers of Jesus.

That being said, kids are definitely welcome at CornerStone!

CornerStone Babies is for BIRTH-2 YRS.

We provide safe and fun childcare for all children 2 years old and under.

CornerStone Kids is designed for kids ages PRE-K to 5th grade.

At CornerStone, we desire for our kids to fall in love with our Savior, His Word and worshiping Him. With that in mind, our children’s worship and learning experience mirrors that of the congregation as a whole. CornerStone Kids learn the basics of real, authentic worship as they engage in song, prayer and learning of God’s Word through activities and reading the Bible. In a world where many people don’t understand the Bible in context, and many times we teach the Bible like Mother Goose stories, we feel it is important our children learn that, from cover to cover, the Bible is really just One Story…the story of the redemption of mankind through the sacrificial death of a Savior. From beginning to end, every part of the Bible was written to point to Jesus. For that reason, we have chosen to use the children’s Bible curriculum called, One Story to facilitate Bible learning. One Story is designed to take your child chronologically through the entire Bible in two years, providing for them Bible learning the way God intended it…as One Story. When your child travels through this curriculum from age 3 through 5th grade, he or she will cultivate a working knowledge of the Bible. With an understanding of the One Story God told in the Bible, your child will build a framework in which to go deeper into the Word of God.

Thrive is a new and developing organization of student-led ministries on college and university campuses. CornerStone Baptist Church has chosen to affiliate with Thrive for our student outreach ministry. Thrive is an evolving ministry of CornerStone Baptist Church led by and for the students of Mississippi State University and overseen by our Pastor, Greg Upperman. We exist to create opportunity for fellowship among college aged believers where they are encouraged to grow in their walk with Jesus and to provide an opportunity for those who don’t yet know Jesus to respond to the message of the Gospel. We are a group of Christians who want to grow together in our faith and develop strong friendships that will last beyond our time at the university. Students who are a part of Thrive have the opportunity to grow and shape the ministry now and for future students. Our vision at CornerStone is to do whatever it takes to reach the campus of Mississippi State University, the community of Starkville and the world with the message of our life-changing Savior, Jesus Christ, and it is our goal that our student ministry will foster this same vision in the lives of students at Mississippi State. We work to accomplish this goal in three ways:

#1

Loving God

The greatest commandment in the entire Bible is to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Matthew 22:37). This commandment is about us worshiping the Lord God with everything we have. We worship Jesus because we love Jesus. Worship is a response of all we are to all God has revealed Himself to be in the Scriptures. Worship is a way of life and it is what we are created to do. Worship is singing, praying, listening, enjoying and admiring God. Thrive values Christ-centered worship. We value worship that is passionate, engaging and full of scripture, prayer and an awareness of God’s presence, both in our individual lives and in our group worship services.

Each week, Thrive students are encouraged to meet our church family at CornerStone Baptist Church for a time of worship through music led by our worship team and a message from the Word of God. We meet each Sunday morning at 10:30 am. Coffee and donuts are served. If you’re interested in being a member of our worship team, please contact our Worship Pastor, Justin Register.

#2

Loving People

Jesus said the second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:39). Who are our neighbors? Our neighbors are anyone and everyone God gives us the opportunity to encounter. In other words, just love people…everyone. We’re usually pretty good at loving ourselves. We strive to make sure all our needs and many of our wants are met. At Thrive, we want to get really good at loving others the same way. Here’s how we do it:

Through Service: Serving was the heartbeat of Jesus’ ministry, and serving others will be the heartbeat of Thrive. We are called and will strive to serve our community by reaching out to those who have genuine needs. We will show the love of Christ by serving the community through every-day, individual opportunities and through group service projects organized by CornerStone Baptist Church. It is important for us to demonstrate God’s Love, not just through our words, but through our actions, and we believe that many hands make light the work. Check out some of our previous and upcoming service opportunities:

Completed Service Opportunities for 2010-2012

Upcoming Service Opportunities for 2012

Through Outreach: Outreach at Thrive has two different functions: to bring new people into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ and to bring new people into Thrive. We accomplish the first through our Evangelism training. We teach our students how to share their faith, place them with a partner, and encourage them to seek opportunities to share their faith. We accomplish the second through on campus outreach events, signs, phone calls, and emails.

#3

Making Disciples

The last command Jesus left with His disciples was for them to reach the whole world with the gospel and to make new disciples. A true disciple loves, studies, follows after, and seeks to imitate in life his/her Master Teacher. We can’t follow or imitate who we don’t know. While it is important that we have corporate worship, it is also important to have an opportunity to study the Bible in small settings which allow for more in-depth learning and discussion. Each week, we host Community Groups where students and the rest of the church family can study the Word together. Community Groups meet each Sunday at 5:30pm at Pastor Greg’s home. The people of CornerStone Baptist Church serve snacks each week for Community Group at no cost to students. So come on! Let’s get our grub on and get in the Word!

Fun, Thrive Style!

There’s more to life than work, work, work. We want to serve God and others with everything we’ve got, but we also believe that fun and fellowship are vital parts of life. At Thrive, we believe that God wants us to do life together. As a matter of fact, it is impossible to find fulfillment in life (to THRIVE in life) without meaningful relationships. Therefore, we seek to provide at least one opportunity for some serious fun each month. We want to grow together in our faith and develop strong friendships that will last beyond our time at the university. Upcoming events are TBA and sometimes spontaneous, so check back or check in often with Jeremy for what’s on the calendar.

At CornerStone we value Prayer!

Jesus valued prayer in His earthly ministry. He often went to be alone and to pray to the Father (Luke 6:12). He also took time to specifically teach His disciples how to pray (Luke 11:1-13). At CornerStone Baptist Church we value prayer and recognize its power. We believe it can change people, circumstances, and outcomes. Therefore we will support every ministry and every minister with prayer. Prayer will be a part of our fellowship with each other and in our private and public worship.

Join us each Wednesday from 7:30-8:30 at the church for a special time of prayer for Starkville, the lost, and our church.
